Looking thru Vernon's stuff

Was trying to sort out some of Uncle Vernon's bajillions of pictures, and came across this one. He's holding the camera I still have. Grandma gave it to me when we last went back to the farm as a family in '73 I think. I took a mess of pictures with it. Took great photos! Not sure how well it'd do anymore though. Everything's pretty well gunked up. Shutter hardly works, all the glass and mirrors are pretty fogged up and all. I found it's twin in a used camera shop down in Seattle some 15 or 20 years ago, and the fella there told me they were german made, probably mid or late 40's vintage. The pic of Vernon looks like it was taken when he was in Hawaii in the late 40's/early 50's.

Not sure when these were from

Some old faded photos I have, but not sure when they were taken. These were form an old roll of film I found in Vernon's stuff that was never developed. I developed them years ago when I used to do my own, probably when I was in high school. They appear to be when the garage/shop was built.

Grandma's diaries

I'm going to jump around a bit with my posts. Thought it would be fun to post an entry from grandma's diaries here and there. They start in January 1951, go up thru I think about 1980 or so, maybe later. Most of the stuff she wrote was just what the weather was, who stopped by for dinner, ect. But here and there I read stuff that's kinda fun to read.
So let's start with January 6, 1951:

"35 Below.
Dad applied for his drivers license. Sent pictures of us to Miriam, Hal, Peggy and Vernon."

Grandpa applied for his drivers license in 1951? And 35 BELOW!!!???
Oh, and Peggy was my dad's first wife. Strange lady from what I hear.


August3 1951:
"Water installed in the house, hot and cold. Dad initiated the bathroom, took a bath."

Love this picture! All that's missing is a couple tommy guns!
I sent this to June's grandaughter, Sharon, and she sent it back with the info you see. I wasn't sure who all was on it.

Homestead land deed

I found this land deed made out to Tobias Karlson on the Ellis Island web page. (Had a hard time finding it, as I kept looking for Carlson spelled with a "C") Dated 1902, and issued on behalf of President Theodore Roosevelt. There actually should have been another on file, I think. The Carlson's homesteaded about 400 acres according to the article, but this deed is for 121 acres. Must have added more acreage later.
